The evenings are getting darker, and it’s even nearly dark when most of us finish work. So, when taking a dog for a walk when you’re not so visible, you should use these tips and tricks for safety in the dark.
This may seem an obvious one but you still see people doing it all the time. Try to avoid wearing dark clothing, especially Black. Wear white or other bright clothing that won’t make you blend into the background.
In the Summer you might enjoy a walk in the woods or an unlit area due to the lighter evenings, but as it gets darker try and stick to a lit path, housings estates etc.
You may come across a path or such that is dark, and although it may not last for long it’s always key to be safe. Bring along a torch or headlamp with you, even a phone torch would be helpful.
Bring a Friend
If you feel a bit uneasy walking in the dark alone, bring a friend. It will not only calm your nerves but add a bit of fun for you and your dog too!
Now for your dog…
If you dog is nervous around dogs, especially at night you should probably put them on a lead as you can’t see as well and won’t be able to easily see other dogs coming towards you.
As you will probably be walking on a path, you might want to keep them on a lead anyway due to cars, cyclists and other pedestrians.
