Talking in a high-pitched voice does really work – but only for puppies. As a result, your baby voice is actually effective for our pooches!
Our higher-pitched voice actually make dogs more excited and by dogs, we mean puppies. Puppies do tend to get more excited than older dogs anyway, but it doesn’t mean that your loud and sharp voice can’t be effective.
But, what is it for? We commonly use our higher-pitched voices because we think something’s cute or we want to congratulate our pooches; “good boy” and “well don sweetie pie” are common phrases to use.
Does it work?…
Because of the higher shriek it tends to catch their attention more. They can then relate the tone to whenever they do something well.
An older dog would just look at you then probably ignore what was said or will walk away, they’re not too bothered about the excitement in your voice.
Younger puppies also see the tone of voice as an “innovation to play” says Nicolas Mathevon, of the University of Lyon and St Etienne, after the puppies went barking and running towards the speaker, in this particular experiment.
The study is published in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B.
Do you know what puppies also really like? The Gencon dog head collar! The Gencon® All-in-1 and Headcollars are made from soft yet durable fabric and are specifically designed not to pull up into your dog’s eyes or uncomfortably turn their head, making them the perfect lead training accessories for grown dogs and puppy walking.
The Gencon consists of two simple loops that apply gentle pressure when your dog pulls, the lead gently but effectively stops your dog pulling forwards.
