Do dogs love music like we do? If so, what music do they actually like? Rock, pop, alternative?
The University of Glasgow released a study that discovered that dogs “prefer soft rock and reggae”, over other genres of music.
A variety of music was played by researchers to dogs at a re-homing centre in Dumbarton, Scotland and also assessed behavioural and physiological changes in the dogs.
When the dogs listened to reggae and soft rock the pooches seemed to have a positive behaviour change, says Prof. Neil Evans.
Though, the study also suggested that each dog had their own individual music tastes, Prof. Evans adds.
Prof Evans said: “Overall, the response to different genres was mixed highlighting the possibility that like humans, our canine friends have their own individual music preferences.”
He also named the music a ‘Canine-approved playlist’.
The researchers found that dogs had a decease in stress levels by measuring their heart rates, when they played music.
“We were keen to explore the effect playing different genres of music had.
“It was clear that the physiological and behavioural changes observed were maintained during the trial when the dogs were exposed to a variety of music.” says, PhD student Amy Bowman.
The Scottish SPCA say that they are going to invest n sound systems for all of their kennels.
