Your dog may hate taking baths, if so, we have some tips on making “bath time” more enjoyable and not be such a battle!
You may find it to be a constant struggle to get your pooch to be involved with bath time, though we know some dogs love it!
Our first tip is a big NO, NO! Don’t use the word “bath” around them, spell it out if you need to, like a baby! It will sound like a cue and they will immediately know and be reluctant to doing anything right from the start; You want to leave it as much as a surprise as you can!
Treats woks in every other situation so why not now? Treats are great for catching your pooches right before bath time, who doesn’t love a treat?!
Avoid chasing your dog around the house and getting every family member in every corner, they will think it’s a game and carry on what they’re already doing!
You want bath time especially to always be something that they enjoy and don’t try and avoid. Use a snack jar in the bathroom then you can reward good behaviour right away, just don’t go too overboard on the treats! Only reward calm behaviour, and calm behaviour only!
You should give them a long-lasting toy after the bath so they have something to look forward too; do this right from the first bath you give them so they can get into a ‘pattern’.
Use warm water, avoiding boiling hot water, because cold water is likely to make a dog panic.
Place an anti-slip mat or towel on the floor of the bath because if they slip they’re also more likely to panic.
You should also use a collar that’s comfortable, doesn’t pull too much and is washable after all those dirty baths! We recommend the Gencon All – in – One because it’s simple and quick to use, won’t pull up into their eyes, soft and comfortable and works on all sizes and breeds of dogs!
A washcloth is great for the face so you can more precise and more gentle around the eye, mouth and nose area, your pooch could get quite panicky if water goes up their snouts!
But if you’ve tried all these tips and you’ve still got no hope, call your groomer for some advice or we’re sure they’d be happy to have your pooch!
